Imagine you run a computer without Operating System. Let's say you need to visit a website, or you want to play a song. You will need to perform number of operations and execute number of instructions by yourself to do the above mentioned work. It will consume too much time may be hours or days or months too as you will need to figure out what actually is to be done to do it then you will perform those tasks.
What the operating system does is basically it performs those number of complicated repetitive operations that needs to be performed in background without our intervention thus reduces the hectic tasks and provides us a beautiful interface through which we can interact with the hardware.
Thus in simple terms Operating System provides an easy to use interface and manages all the communication between hardware thus making Computer user friendly.
That's why we need Operating System.
Hope it helps
