What is the importance of elections?
elections are the most important time for both citizens in a country and the politicians. A free and fair election guarantee the trust of the citizens in the elected government. Throughout history, there have been monarchies and dictatorships where the public had no say in who led the country. In the case of a monarchy, leadership roles were inherited-- a royal family ruled, and the king or queen came from that family. This often resulted in schemes and intrigue, as well as wars, but again, the public at large rarely had a voice in the decisions that affected their lives. The same was true for government by dictatorship-- a "great leader" ruled, often with an iron hand; this sometimes provided a country with enforced stability, but more often than not, also resulted in the deaths of those who dissented or disagreed with the direction the leader had chosen. A democracy, imperfect though it may be, at least provides the public with some say in how the country is being run. Through voting, people from all socioeconomic backgrounds (not just the ruling elites) can express their viewpoints, and help to select members of the government who best reflect those points of view. The importance of elections is that they first provide an opportunity for candidates to discuss and debate the issues, and then they allow eligible voters to be part of the decision as to who should be our leaders, at the federal or the local level. I think we can all find flaws in our current system of elections: for example, there is too much money in politics, and there are too many obstacles for insurgent candidates who are neither Democrats nor Republicans. But even when I consider the alternatives to having elections, I much prefer being given a chance to get involved in the electoral process, whether to work on a campaign, stand up for issues I believe in, or cast my vote on what direction I want for the country.
