Literacy rate is the percentage of people in a specific region who have the capability to read or write any language. Literacy rates are drastically low in India, particularly in the rural areas among the lower groups of the poor revolving among the low developed areas such in the villages rather than in the cities. Because of this, people get to know nothing about the outside world. They are gullible and very superstitious and come to believe everything. They are fooled by rich people. If educational opportunities are provided to them, they will get opportunities for better jobs for improving their own lifestyles. If people are literate, they will be able to contribute for increasing the country's economy for who knows that one day, they will be able to become teacher, lawyer or a big successful businessman.

Literacy in India is a key for socio-economic progress. Despite government programmes, India's literacy rate increased only "sluggishly". The 2011 census, indicated a 2001–2011 decadal literacy growth of 9.2%, which is slower than the growth seen during the previous decade.
