Why do we need less effort to drive in a screw through a piece of wood rather than to hammer in a nail?

when we hammer a nail we fix it by pushing wood fibers down but they don't have moch space to move but when we drive a screw, screw make fibers to move aside which is easier to compress them by hammering.
