It is depressing as inspite of India producing plenty of food to feed its population it is unable to give access to food to large number of people.

Amount of food wasted in our country is staggering.

India with a population of over 1.2 billion has seen extreme growth in past two decades.

Its net domestic product has increased 4.5 times and per capita consumption has increased 3 times.

In same way food grains production has nearly doubled.

Despite the industrial and economic growth and where India gives sufficient food to feed its population the nation is unable to provide food to a large number of people especially women and children.

Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in a report states that ‘State of Food Insecurity in the World, 2015’ where 194.6 million people in India are under-nourished.

By this measure India accounts for a 1/4 of undernourished population in the universe.

51 per cent of women between 15 years to 59 years are anaemic and 44% of children under five are under-weight.

Malnourished children but also adults have higher death risk from illnesses like diarrhoea, pneumonia, and malaria.

Global Hunger Index 2014 ranks India at 55/76 countries on the point of 3 leading indicators i.e. prevalence of under-weight children under 5 years and under-five child mortality rate and proportion of undernourished in  population.
