In order to being uniformity in local time, the standard meridian of 82°30E has been accepted. It passes through Mirzapur (UP). Hence, we can state that we need standard meridian for India to maintain in a standard time.

We need Standard Meridian because-

1.Standard Meridian of India pass
Through Mirzapur Uttar pradesh which divides the country into approximately half.
2.From Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh there is a time lag of 2 hours.
3.This is because 1degree=4 minutes
Latitudinal and Longitudinal extent of India =30×4=120 minutes =2hours
4.To avoid the confusion of time in different states, Standard Meridian 82 degree 30 N has been taken as the standard time for whole country.

Hope this helps you
