India is a vast country.

Due to its large extent India has a time lag of about 2 hours between gujarat and arunachal pradesh. This difference in time will create a lot of confusion and problem in railways, transportation, trade, etc.

So to avoid this confusion and to carry on the services smoothly India adopts standard time.

The meridian passing through mirzapur in uttar Pradesh is taken as the standard meridian of india and its time as Indian Standard Time (IST)

The time of a place depends on the longitude that passes through it. Therefore, the standard time for each country is usually taken as the time of the central meridian that passes through it. ... Thus, we need a standard meridian for the country. In India 82 ½ °E longitude determines the standard time
