why do we need to name files

To a point, we can do those things, however, we also need to have an absolute way of identifying a file.

For example, I write a program, a desktop application, and it puts a logo on the 'About' window, how do I refer to that file in my code?

Say I've got an automated system running on a server, it produces 1000s of PDFs a day, it needs to put the logo of a company on each PDF, how does it refer to that logo?

Metadata is fine for, say, desktop users looking for a song, and they don't mind getting 10 results and browsing for the song they want. For many, many uses though, we also need a definitive way of identifying one unique file.
