I'd say it's psychological. Having wounds exposed feels wrong because your insides are, well, outside. Covering them means to your brain that the situation can't get worse and that you just need to heal now. Pain is a sense of danger and damage so by covering it, you can reduce the danger and your brain can ignore the messages of damage coming from the surrounding nerves because you know that your body is healing without exposure to the world.
