Answer:

When two or more substances are mixed together they form a mixture. Components of a mixture should be separated because some components may not be useful or may spoil the useful component of the mixture.

We need to separate the substances for various reasons like:

  • To remove the undesirable and harmful components.

For example – Small pieces of stones and unwanted seed grains are removed from rice and pulses before cooking.

  • To remove the impurities as to obtain pure sample of a substance.

For example – Impurities are removed from substances to make them pure as many pure substances are needed in medicines, research and so on.

  • To separate useful components of a mixture so that each component can be properly used.

For example – From the crude petroleum , useful components that are needed in our daily life like petrol, diesel, kerosene and many more are separated.

Extra Information:

Some methods of separation:

  • Sieving

☛ This method is used when the size of particles of different components of a mixture is different.

  • Winnowing

☛ This method is used when there is a difference in weights of the components of a mixture.

  • Magnetic separation

☛ This method is used when we have two separate magnetic component of a mixture from non magnetic components.
