Because biomass and energy decrease as we go higher in trophic level .

Explanation:

  • According to a 10% law of energy transfer, only 10% of energy will be transferred to the successive trophic level. This means producer will transfer 10% of its total energy to the primary consumer when any primary consumer will eat consumer.
  • Then when secondary consumer will eat primary consumer than also only 10% of total energy will be transferred by primary consumer to secondary consumer and this applies to every trophic level.
  • Therefore it is not possible to have a fifth trophic level because there will not be enough energy available to support the organism living at fifth trophic level. This is why the number of organisms gets reduce when we move to a higher trophic levels.
