Grass provides 500J of energy to rat but when it reaches to Hawke ,the top carnivore, it decreases to 5J
Grass-----> rat------> Snake-----> Hawke
500J. 50J. 5J
hence,after reaching Hawke sufficient energy will no be transferred to any other carnivore.That is why there are generally four tropic levels.
