why do we not hear echoes in our ordinary surrounding

We can't hear echos in our ordinary surrounding because we all know that the reflected sound is called echo and it only reflect when a object or surfaces are more than 17 cm away from the direct sound source, our surrounding have so many things. So, clearly sound is absorbed and we can not hear echos.
