Planting legumes is beneficial in a number of ways. The roots from legume crops like vetch or field peas condition the soil and capture soluble nitrogen, they hold the soil in place to prevent erosion, and they suppress many weeds with the thick foliage. Legumes also are easily managed so when the field is planted later, the plant residue can be cut in with a disc harrow or simply mowed down close to the ground and it won’t interfere with most planting operations...
