Why do we pour liquid paraffin on the surface of yeast and glucose solutions

Liquid paraffin is added to glucose with yeast in anaerobic respiration experiment.... The paraffin acts as barrier between oxygen and the glucose solution with yeast so that there no aerobic respiration could occur.... ... Hence, to prove that Carbon dioxide is released during anaerobic respiration paraffin is used.
