Why do we represent bond enthalpy with a negative or positive sign?

because when the bond is formed then it requires some for the formation that would be indicated by positive sign and if the bond is breaks then some energy is also requires for the breaking of bond that would b3 indicated by negative sign. so we represent bond enthalpy with a position or negative sign.
