it is the the force product of displacement done by the object in a particular time

where f is force and D is displacement.

Direction of force in a gravity is always towards the centre of earth.

And the direction of displacement is against the force exerted by the gravity.

So both the force and displacement is in opposite direction. So the work done is negative.
