Explanation:

The moon moves around the earth in about 27 days and it takes the same time to complete one spin on its axis. This is why we can see only one side of the moon always.

We see one side of the moon because;

  • We know that moon rotates on its own axis and also it rotates around the earth.
  • The speed with which it undergoes both the rotations is the same.
  • It is because of this similar speed that one gets to see the same side of the moon always.
  • This speed is a result of the tidal locking of the moon to the earth.
  • A tidally locked body will always have one side facing the planet it orbits.
  • And when tidally locked, the time taken to rotate will match the time taken to orbit.
