The spots that we can see on the surface of the moon are actually holes called craters. These craters were formed when meteorites hit the moon creating holes.These holes are lower than the surface of the moon and thus do not reflect light and we see it as dark spots on the moon.They can be of any shape dwpending on the meteorite that hits.
