Muddy road reduces the frictional force due to which we slip as we do not get a better grip due to less friction.

Frictional force enables us to provide grip on the road when we are walking. It arises mainly due to interlocking of projections of one surface into depressions of others.

On muddy road , the water provides a thin layer between our feet and road. The layers break the interlocking and hence the friction decreases  which makes us to slip.
