We smell the ester by wafting the air instead of smelling it directly from the mouth of the test tube because-

  • Direct smelling or inhalation of chemicals leads to harmful consequences to your health , it can damage the mucous membrane ,throat and even lungs.

  • Wafting is more safer method to smelling the dangerous and unpleasant chemicals ,also it helps in inhaling the low concentration vapours .

  • As, in the wafting technique we use our hand to draw the air from the opening container to the direction of our nose .So , the harmful chemicals not affect our health that much as in the case of direct inhaling does .
