Kerosene, being lighter than water, floats over water and does not allow the pupae of the mosquitoes to breed.just in order. to prevent malaria and dengue.this is done .

We usually do that to block oxygen for the mosquito larvae so that they stop breathing hence killing the mosquito larvae.

Though this method is not advisable,. It makes the environment polluted so other methods like fish in ponds are advised to be used
