Why do we take take the focal length of concave lens as negative and that of convex as positive?

It's taken according to New Cartesian sign convention.

Anonymous: But according to it only the RHS and upside digits should be taken as positive

its bcz concave lens gives us inverted image and convex mirror gives us erect image
