We use germinating seeds so that we get carbon dioxide for the experiment.
The carbon dioxide would either will react with KOH to create a pressure imbalance so that water from the other side of the pipe gets up, proving presence of CO2.
It also could be passed from lime water to make it milky indicating CO2 is produced
