why do we use -h=ut-1/2gt2 instead of h=ut +1/2gt2

normal equation is h=ut+1/2gtt but when we go against gravity or g -ve sign is multiplied for -ve direction

it is the equation of motion in which h is total height , u is initial speed,t is time and g is acceleration due to gravity.
