Why do we use KOH solution and germinating seeds in an experiment to show that CO2 gas is released during respiration?

KOH solution is basically a basic compound which is usually used in such experiments to absorb the carbon dioxide produced by the germinating seed during the course of the experiment. **It is even used to fulfill the aims or needs of the experiment.
