Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it's used in a thermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures.

Helloo!!
1. due to thermal expansion meaning the molecular bonds will expand with heat and contract with cold. This is why the mercury fluctuates according to temperature.
2. Mercury's silver appearance, makes it easy to read temperatures at just a glance. bt nowadays their are digital thermometer instead of Mercury thermometer because it is hard to study!!
hope it helps
