why do we use mercury in the thermometer? can water be used instead of mercury? what are the problems in using itt

Water expands anomalously and that is an undesireable characteristic when it comes to measuring the temperature of a substance. Mecury does not wet the surfaces 'tis in contact with, whereas water does (by wetting, i mean sticking to the surface).
