why do we use Mercury in thermometer?Can water be used instead of Mercury?What are the problems in using it?

we use mercury in thermometer because it does not stick to the thermometer and catches heat very easily it is very non reactive we cannot use water

Mercury is the only metal which is in liquid state at the room temperature and metals are good conductors of heat, It is used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion hence slightest change in the temperature is notable. Water cannot be used in thermometer because it is set by boiling point and freezing point, therefore water would expand at its freezing point and won’t give us the exact results.
