We use seatbelts while riding a car to ensure our safety. Since, While we are in a car we are moving with it with the same momentum as the car. If accidentally the car hits anything which could block its path and stop it immediately, the momentum of the car will become 0 but our body will remain in motion and after the accident our body could hit something hard or fly out of the car's windshield and could cause serious casualty. In this situation if we had a seatbelt on, the seatbelt could have pulled us back and stopped our body from hitting anything hard or flying out of the car's windshield.

Hope this helps you!
