why do we use thicker wires for heaters than for lamps?

Original heaters from the 1920's were found to heat better when the wire was thicker to keep the temperature down, and not burn up in the oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere. When thinner wires, were used, they burned too 'hot', and were abandond, as being impracticable.
