Answer:

Generally we write it as S2. As in nature sulfur combines with itself to become stable by forming sulfur molecule(S2)

Answer:

'S' is simply the symbol for a single sulphur atom but 'S8' is the symbol of a sulphur molecule. A sulphur molecule contains 8 sulphur atoms.

we cannot use S for sulphate as S is used for a simple sulphur atom whereas sulphate is an anion having more electrons then a sulphur atom.
