(1)Western Ghats receive rainfall from the Arabian sea monsoon winds. As these winds blow over warm oceans, they bring abundant moisture.
(2)The Ghats do not allow the winds to cross over without shedding their moisture on the western slopes.
(3)when these winds reach the eastern coast they are almost dry.
(4)Another branch of south-west monsoon i.e, the Bay of Bengal branch moves parallel to the eastern coast. In this way, this region is located in an unfavourable position with reference of the monsoon winds.

Western ghat recieve more rainfall than eastern ghat:

  • The winds that come from the Arabian sea hit the slopes of the western ghats and coll down resulting in 'heavy rainfall' in the western ghat regions.
  • Meanwhile, the south-western monsoon clouds move side by side to the eastern ghats and are unable to block these moisturised winds resulting in less rainfall in the eastern ghats.
  • The eastern ghats also lay in the 'rain shadow' region of the Arabian sea whereas the western ghats lie in the rain-fed area of the Arabian sea.
  • The eastern and western ghats are the two mountain ranges that are formed in the eastern and western sides or edges of the 'Deccan plateau' in peninsular India.
