Why do woolen clothes keep us warm whereas cotton clothes dont?

Woollen clothes provide thermal insulation. They trap heat of the body and don't let them slip away. Whereas cotton clothes provide aeration and provide easy exchange of warmth of the body with surrounding environment.

This is also the reason why cotton clothes are preferred during summer while woollen clothes are preferred for winter
