He was consistently against prejudice. As a wealthy white man, he could have chosen to be quiet about it. He could have chosen the path of least resistance and nobody would have batted an eyelid. He didn’t.
He would tell stories about racism and sexism and all the other isms and write editorials about his views. He wasn’t perfect by a long shot, he didn’t always get it right, and sometimes the ingrained prejudices that people who aren’t exposed to them have to wilfully unlearn would show up in his work, but he was consistent. And consistent patterns of behaviour are of far more value when rating people than individual occurrences.
