Blinking in an involuntary muscle movement that exists to distribute the tear layer that coats the eye. We need this tear layer to lubricate the eye and it is also necessary for clear vision, and metabolic functions.
Blinking forces tears towards the puncta, the ducts where fluid leaves the eye, so that we maintain a fresh clean tear film.
Blinking also assists in removing dust, dirt and other particulate matter from the eye.
Blinking keeps the eyes from drying out. On average we blink 14 times per minute, but only 7 times per minute when staring at a computer. This is just one of the reasons people have issues with prolonged computer use.
