Inertia is the resistance of change of state of motion of an object. When we are in a moving bus and the bus applies brakes suddenly, our bodies resist the change from motion to rest and therefore remains in motion for a while before it adjusts to the bus (which is at rest). So, we tend to fall in the forward direction.
Exact opposite happens when bus starts moving suddenly, body resists change from rest to motion and therefore falls backward.
