Ahoy !
We fall in the forward direction when a moving bus brakes to a stop dur to the inertia of motion. In that situation our body tends to be in motion and wants to continue motion but since brakes are applied the body have to come in motion that's why it gives a forward je.rk.
We get a backward jer.k when a body starts because of the inertia of rest. Our body at that time is in rest and wants to continue rest position and thus gives a backward je.rk.
hope this helps!
