Vigorous activities make up to work hard which results in the increase in breath rate. When we work so hard we need more oxygen to perform the activities. When we don't get sufficient oxygen the muscle cells starts performing anaerobic respiration in the absence of oxygen. One of the by-products of this process is lactic acid. This lactic acid causes cramps in our muscles, due to which we feel pain.

Due to vigorous exercise, the muscle cells do not get sufficient oxygen and respire anaerobically-Glucose is broken down into lactic acid and carbon dioxide along with releasing 2 molecules of ATP-Adenosine Triphosphate. Lactic acid is highly toxic in nature and its accumulation in the muscle cells indulges in pain.Massaging or a hot water both improves blood circulation and more oxygen is accumulated in the body and completely breaks down lactic acid into carbon dioxide, water and 38 ATP molecules-Thus getting relief form muscle cramps.
