From the story :  we are not afraid to die,  if we are all together...

The author , a sailor, and his family along with some sailors were on a voyage on the seas in the Indian ocean.   They were tormented and troubled by the cyclones and rough waves.. The were in danger.  Courage held them together.

They travelled to Ile Amsterdam as it was the nearest.  They did not have food for many days too.  When they reached the volcanic rock with some vegetation on it, called Ile Amsterdam, they were very happy.  So They called it very beautiful as it saved them and their lives.

To the narrator and the other crew member it was a sign of survival. Therefore to the narrator it was the most beautiful island.

In reality it was only a black piece of volcanic rock ,with little vegetation this may not be visually beautiful, but the purpose it served to the crew members made ile amsterdam beautiful, the beauty was added when the inhabitants were happy to help them
