here is your answer :-

Not all births are in a sterile Hospital.

Not all home births have an EMT on standby; some mothers are attended by family or a doula.

Some homebirth areas are not sanitized so cleaning might be necessary.

Physically. When the birth is imminent, the stretched skin would appreciate a little help and a warm cloth on the nether regions sounds like it would be just the thing to have!

Psychologically, the relief of a warm cloth would also be welcomed. I remember the hospital labor room chaos when I had my two boys at ages 19 and 22; anything comforting would have been helpful. Anything.

And yes, if nothing else, a cup of hot tea would have been welcomed at any time. There are other good answers here besides pacifying a distraught father, which I feel is rather degrading. My husband had to wait in the hallway of the hospital, back before Father's were allowed in labor.

I had reacted to the pit drip and was having violent contractions and my memories are of a medieval torture chamber. Alone.
