This is becoz due to less atmospheric pressure means that the density of the air is lower. For mountain climbers at extreme altitudes, such as mount Everest where the air is only about one third of as dense as the air at sea level, it is challenge to be able to get enough oxygen in each breathe so we have to take a long breathe at the top of the mountains.
