When our bodies get cold, the thermoregulation center n the brain known as the hypothalamus initiates mechanisms for the body to get back heat in it. One way it does this, is by initiating the muscle of the body to start involuntary contraction and relaxations which is exhibited as shivering. This movements of the muscles generate heat for the body mechanically. The chattering of our teeth are as a result of the movement of the jaw muscles as well.

Shivering or chattering is nothing but sudden expansion and contraction of our muscles.
It occurs in case of warm blooded animals when the temperature outside is low.
Shivering actually generates a lot of heat energy.
