because tiny sensors present in our skin send signals to our brain and the brain again sends message to the body that it needs heat and the muscles start moving (which we call shivering).This is to generate heat. That is why we shiver.
We chatter our teeth so that the mouth remains hot as if not so the brain can freeze.that is why you might have noticed that while eating ice cream, we some times chatter our mouth.
