We slip when we walk on ice due to less friction.

What is friction?

Friction is a contact force, that always opposes the motion. Friction is of three types:

☆ Static friction

☆ Sliding friction

☆ Rolling friction

Static friction > Sliding friction > Rolling friction

Apart from these three types of friction, there is one more type of friction known as fluid friction or drag.

How are we able to walk?

We are able to walk due to friction only. This happens as follows: When we walk, our foot tries pushes itself in the backward direction. But the friction acts in the opposite direction, i.e. forward direction. This is how we are not able to slip on the roads and rough surfaces while walking.

Coming on to your question:

Why do you slip when you walk on ice?

As we know that ice has a smooth surface, therefore it has lesser irregularities on its surface. Less irregularities means less interlocking between the surface of ice and our foot. If there would be less interlocking, the friction would also be less and therefore we will have more chances to slip.
