I think stealing can be separated into 2 categories;

 

1. Stealing for a need

This refers to stealing for a basic human need (food, water, shelter) or as a result of substance physical addiction

2. Stealing for greed

Refers to people who have no real need to steal except to either further themselves financially or with something materialistic

Explanation:

Now those stealing for a need are (in my opinion) not all that interesting. Their motivation and reason are clear, not necessarily justified but at least legitimate.

If through some turn of events you ended up in a position unable to generate an income to afford food, as a basic human instinct you would obtain it one way or another. Not too many people would simply crawl up and starve.

The second category; stealing for greed. This is where a multitude of scenarios and human behaviors come to interact.
