Ashoka was a unique ruler due the deeds he did after the Kalinga war.
Any king after winning a war and having the huge amount territory under him would never give his victory for anything else but Ashoka gave up the idea of conquering the world and followed Buddhism which was unique in itself.
He tried to spread the message of peace through his children and helped in the propagation of Buddhism in and across the nation which shows that he was not any common ruler thinking about worldly wealth and fame but he thought about mankind.
Hope it helps
