First of all let I give you brief insight about Coal and Diamond.
Coal
It is a complex mixture of compounds of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and free carbons. The compounds of nitrogen, sulphur are also present in a very small amount in coal. Coal was formed by the decomposition of large plants and trees buried under the earth millions of years ago. This is slow chemical process.
Diamond
It is the purest form of carbon and one of the allotropes of carbon. They are the hardest known substance on Earth. The hybridization of carbon in diamond is .
Q.Why do you think coal is more fragile than a diamond?
Reason:-
- Diamond is a covalent solid. In it's crystal, each atom is covalently bonded to other carbon atoms situated around it tetrahedrally whereas Coal has somewhat graphite like structure where few carbon atoms are free or bonded with atoms other than carbon.
- Due to catenation property of carbon diamond is harder than coal because diamond is pure carbon compound which gave it an edge over coal.
