why do you think forests are conserved in areas not fit for cultivation

It is because in areas which are not gud for cultivation there will be less amount to oxygen therefore it is conserved to balance the ecology

Cultivation creates the biggest demand on land
Cultivation for food crops or for plantations involves massive clearing of forests
in areas that are not fit for cultivation, the cost of establishing food and cash crops is high, therefore the natural vegetation is not disturbed and the forest grow at natural rate (eg:- western ghats)
