Grouped objects can be selected easily by selecting any object in the group. If one is selected they all are.

Grouping keeps objects locked together (generally). If one object is moved then all are moved.

Grouped objects can be moved together up and down the object layer order easily.

Grouped objects are treated as one object when the align and distribute tools are used.

Grouping a selection of objects in multiple layers will pull them all up to the top most layer that has an object selected.
